About the Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons

The Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons (PAACS) is a strategic response to the need for surgeons in Africa.  We are a non-denominational, multinational service organization training African physicians to become general surgeons who are willing to remain in Africa to meet that need.  For more information, please visit the PAACS home page.

About the General Surgery Training Program at Tenwek Hospital

Tenwek's General Surgery Training program is a five-year curriculum fully accredited by COSECSA (College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa.  COSECSA is an independent body whose aim is to foster postgraduate education in Surgery anCOSECSA Logod to harmonize Surgical Training throughout the regions of East, Central and Southern Africa.  COSECSA is registered as a non-profit making body in the constituent countries of Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Seychelles, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe and has the the endorsement of the Ministries of Health and the Medical Schools of the region.  More information about COSECSA is available at www.cosecsa.org.  It is good to familiarize yourself with COSECSA because that is the body that will be giving the certifying exams at the MCS (Member of College of Surgeons) level after two years of training and the FCS (Fellow of College of Surgeons) level after five years of training.  You will be required to pass all COSECSA exams.

Becoming a PAACS resident at Tenwek Hospital

Candidates must meet all of the following qualifications:

  1. You must be a citizen of an African country and already have a current Kenyan medical license.
  2. You must be a graduate of a recognized medical school and have sucessfully completed a one-year internship program as a medical officer.
  3. You must be a sincere follower of Jesus Christ as evidenced by your words, your actions and your lifestyle.
  4. Two strong recommendations will be required.  One must be from the pastor or lay leader of your local church and one must be from a Christian doctor who knows you well and has worked with you.  These must be sent in separately - not from your e-mail id.
  5. You must be sponsored by a church, mission or organization that is capable of providing financial support (including travel and moving expenses) for each year of training or you may apply for a PAACS scholarship.  Only a limited number of PAACS scholarships/sponsorships are available. 
  6. For each year of residency, you agree to work one year of paid service with a suitable mission hospital. 
  7. Prior to acceptance, a candidate must be fluent in English.

Applications must be submitted no later than October 10, 2011 and if accepted, potential residents must be available to begin training January 1, 2012.
